After more than a week in prison of the police, the Afrobeat musician Seun Kuti has finally been released on bond.

After being detained by police for allegedly punching a police officer, legendary Afrobeat artist Seun Kuti has been released.

After a police officer was assaulted on camera by the Grammy-nominated artist near Lagos’ third mainland bridge, the incident went viral across the country. Seun Kuti was taken into custody by the Nigerian police force in the early hours of this morning, Monday, May 15, 2023, following the tragic occurrence.

Seun Kuti was accused of assaulting a police officer, a violation of Section 356 of the Criminal Code Act. The singer was granted bail on May 16, 2023, but he wasn’t released until today, May 23, 2023. This is despite Magistrate Adeola Olatunbosun’s order for police to finish their investigation within 48 hours.

In order to allow the police to complete their investigation and seek the guidance of the Lagos State Directorate of Public Prosecution, a Sabo-Yaba Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos State reportedly granted the police’s request for an extension of Seun Kuti‘s remand until Tuesday (today) last Thursday.

Now that the artist has been granted bail, he may get back together with his family.
